Lower Spring Mount

Lower Spring Mount

The shop manual says the void in the lower spring mount, just above the trunion on a 64 Classic, acts as a "reservoir" for grease, which has a releave valve which indicates when it's full.
In restoring a 64 Classic, can this old grease be removed? Does the grease go in there by way of overflow when greasing the trunions?

Lower Spring Mount

Yes, grease goes into that chamber when the upper trunnion is greased. You can remove the grease when the upper spring is out by unscrewing the spring seat from the trunnion. I don't know about a valve, I just inject grease until I get overflow, usually through the thrust bearing.
