1961 AMC Rambler

Hey guys,
Got a question about a car I don't own.(See the link)
http://nashville.craigslist.org/car/765527512.html

I probably won't do it because I think a $1,000 is a bit much to give for it without an engine. I may be wrong about that, but considering that I gave $1,200 for my '64 Classic drove it home from an hour away (body and paint in very good condition) it just seems too high a price.

Anyways, I have my 64 Classic and I have my rusted out floor paneled '63 Classic. The 64 has 232 (I'm certain of that now, thanks Matt) and my '63 has the OHC 196. Not much interchanging there, so I have an extra engine.
Would the 196 fit in this car? Did it originally come with that engine in it? Would the transmission interchange too?

Just contemplating a possible future purchase. I have to get rid of the 63 before I could buy the 61. (Wife is threatening me)

IMHO, the 2 dr wagon will draw the $1000 a lot quicker than a running driving 64 classic [depending on options/ body]
The 196 will fitin the American with the note that without a donor engine to pull the front mounts and other idiosycnrcowhatchamakallits it may take some effor to get it all bolted up!
The wagon will have the 4 point mounting setup, newer 196 goes into older, the other way around is a PIA.
That being said a 2 door wagon has always been on my wanted list. Not that I'm about to run down and buy this one either!

Yeah, I looked lovingly at the thing too. Luckily it's far away. I'm
already 3 projects behind and another one would be stupid unless I
thought I could put the Navarro six in it.

Peering into the 195.6 OHV head, I really think you could get some HP
out of that thing without THAT much work. THe exhaust ports aren't too
terrible, in fact. It's not straight out, it's humped, but largeish and
smooth. The intakes are fairly terrible but my DynoSportSim software
shows 50% hp increase with only 6 lbs of turbo boost. There's a lot of
low-hanging fruit in that motor.

All the work is in the head! Easy! A T5, 10" clutch... it would all bolt
in... 'cept for a custom driveshaft.

Like Mark says, two door wagon will bring more. Popularity and interest drives prices first, condition second. Hot rodders mightbe interested in the two door wagon, so there's a lot more universal interest, especially with the usual Ford and Chevy fodder bringing such high prices now.

The only thing you'd really need to put the 63 196 in the 61-63 American is the front mounitng plate. The rear mounts are on the bell housing. You can make mounts and brackets easy enough, but should be able to find a bell cheap. The plate from any 196 (L-head, OHV, or even AL) in any 62 or earlier AMC (63 American) will fit. The timing cover needs to come off, and I think thechain and cam gear too. Would be a good idea to change those while in there, and of course the front seal.

If you get it I have the parts you'd need and would let you have them (bell with mounts and plate) for $25 + shipping. You'd need new rubber mounts though.

I emailed him about the interior and he says it doesn't have any. He says it's just a shell. That is just too much of a project for me to take on.
I have a hard enough time finding small off the wall parts for my '64 Classic; There's no telling what kind stuff I'd run into trying to tackle this one. I'm not experienced enough to handle this project so I will have to pass.

If somebody wants to pay him for it, I can hold on to it for ya till you can come get it though. I think it's a cool car and would hate to see it get chopped up or smashed.

Rats, Figures.
I'd love to have that to put in line to do some day!
Interior or not, Most of them don't have a usable interior anyway!
Theres also a 65 Rambler Convertible listed in the local Bulletin Board! Listed as "parts car".
I don't even have a day off till next Saturday to think about looking at it and it's half a state away.
I doubt it would have much to make my job easier on the ambo though. The add does not even say if it is a Ambo, Classic or American. Not price either.
