Need Cam Specs for High compression

The TSM isn't specific about it, I gave all the specs that were there,
but I have no doubt that it's advertised.

I believe the 0.050 stuff came out way later than what AMC used in their
specs.

One more related question, it appears that AMC used the same cam for ALL engines, regardless of compression ratio and CID size, is this the general case (I've see a 'few' exceptions noted for later 401s). Thanks.

I was a bit surprised to notice that in the '69 TSM, I would have
thought that not adjusting the cam
to the engine displacement would move the torque peak around more than
you might want.
On the other hand, it's certainly cheaper to make one cam fit all!
They did use a different cam in the '70 390 though, from the TSM:
Intake Cam Lobe Lift 0.287"
Intake Valve Timing
Opens 18 degrees BTDC
Closes 68 degrees ABDC
Duration 266 Degrees
Exhaust Cam Lobe Lift 0.287"
Exhaust Valve Timing
Opens 66 degrees BBDC
Closes 20 degrees ATDC
Duration 266 degrees
Valve Opening Overlap 38 degrees
A little more lift, and less overlap, same duration.
I only have those two TSM's, so I can't speak for other years.
There's a line in
"Performance American Style", which AMC produced, describing their cams:
"none have outstanding performance characteristics". I think that
pretty much
says it all!
Cheers,
Dave

Aren't there Group 19 cams? I have one of those AMERICAN PERFORMANCE
booklets if that's of any help.

AMC used a standard for measurement that was common to the automotive industry during that time of rating the camshaft measurements at .004" tappet rise. The .425" lift spec was used for the the duration of 1966-1979 production. Maybe later, but I have not been able to uncover documentation to support it. A major difference in timing, however, occured in 1971. Seems they were having trouble getting the engines to pass new fed emissions requirements, so the changed up the events and lift rate of the camshaft. The pre-71 and early 71 camshafts were 196 degrees at .050" (266 degrees advertised), the "smog" cam specs were 202 degrees duration @.050" (263 advertised) on the intake, 214 degrees @ .050" (293 advertised) on the exhaust. Also, the overlap was reduced to 38 degrees at .050". The '70 390 and 401 cam had 297 degrees intake duration, 304 degrees exhaust duration, and 69 degrees overlap, with .457" lift at the valve, advertised.
