Throatless shear
I'd tag this off topic, but it's not realy very far off since I want it to work on my Convert and Jeep.
I've done some looking and reading.
We have a throatless here at work and it is such a sweet means of cutting sheet metal.
Quiet, takes no power and little effort, even for a crippled guy!
Cuts curves, circles, corners what ever and does not take up a lot of space when not in use.
Beverly is the name that comes up as "the best", but pricing starts at $500+-
So of course i'm looking at cheaper such as HF or wangho [just kidding]
What I have read is that HF's blades chip when they are used to cut steel, once you replace them for $40 they are fine. So that adds up to about $160 + shipping i the end as their shear is right at $119 right now, not on sale.
I found a guy on the evilbay with tons of 100% feedback selling for $100-110, looks the same as the HF but no name on it. He says he can get replacement blades for $25. So his looks to be a better deal in the long run.
Anyway, does anyone have any experience with NON HF Throatless shears? or have another thought as to what may be a better way to go? I do want to stay kind of old fashioned here, no Plasma or such as I would just need to clean up the cuts for welding anyway.
I'm using up to 16 gauge steel on the convertible to rebuild the under fender areas. I won't call the troughs cause when I'm done they aren't anymore!
Got my oldest settled into his freshman year at WVU's dorm.
Youngest is a sophomore in high school, no fall sports and we hired an additional guy at work, so maybe, just maybe I can slowly start wittling away at the humungous pile of projects sitting at home.
Just got to look at them one little bit at a time as if I stand back and look at the whole picture, well, I won't do that!! shudddderrrrr.....

At work we (ahem) bought one from Eastwood. It's an import, but
Taiwanese or at least decent-looking. Kinda like Grizzly vs. Harbor
Freight; Grizzly seems like it ought to be junk but it is pretty good
quality.
Alas, haven't installed it yet, so I can't tell you more. I was supposed
to have it set up a month ago. It'll be in before school starts.
Of course before I even got it BOLTED TO THE FRICKEN TABLE some stoont
nicked the blade probably put a 1/4" bolt in it. Likely the same dim
bulb what ground aluminum in the bench grinder.
Just got the new lathe setup yesterday.
(Our students aren't high school shop monkeys; they are what a friend
calls 'soft-handed new-media types', laptop kids. It's not their fault.
Not a single one of them ever had a pocket knife as a kid. If you want
to ask a revealing question? "When you were 10 did your parents let you
have a pocket knife"? Or ask that of the parents. Of course we cut our
hands with the damn things. B.F.D. That's why you get ten fingers.

Well, hurry up and get it setup so I can get a report on it!
Seriously, China and Taiwan make some heavy old style crap that is good.
The problem is weeding out the true good stuff from the crap!
I'll probably take a chance on this one on evilbay as I have some cash burning a hole in my Paypal account :]
Otherwise I'd wait for the one on HF to go on sale.
If you've ever used one you quickly learn how simple and effective they are!
The leverage lets them cut sheet like butter and they can do some almost fine detail work too.
You're not limited to straight line cuts like the big shears. It is a little harder to get a real straight cut though it can be done.
I've not seen Eastwoods goon sale yet either.

I got my throatless shear from
http://www.tools4cheap.net/
Did a few quick test cuts this evening and it seems to work pretty well.
Looks like a nice quality casting too. No big flaws or rough sections and they finshed it nice too.
It went together easy. Some had complained about the handle hole being misdrilled on the HF piece.
Not on this one. It was a perfect fit.
The test cuts are smooth and clean with no ragged edge or puckering.
It would have been better if I had bolted it to the bench instead of holding it down though.
I ended the session by sticking a nice sharp point on one of the cut pieces into the palm of my hand.
Yep, I'm back!!!! That's how I do things. Work or play, go till I bleed.... Then rest up till it heals :]
Oh, and this guy is up in newengland someplace and he ships way quick and well packed to!
$13 to ship it, Ordered it Wednesday had it today, UPS could not destroy the packaging, they tried.

One thing I noticed after sending this is that the shear I got is exactly the same in both body color and handle color as the HF piece they use in their ad representing their shear.

Mark,
Just wondering what the plans are with the throatless shear?
What you gonna be fabricating?
AMC parts maybe?
Not for a boat............:)
Was it difficult to shear a straight line?
I went to their website and checked on the shear it looks heavy duty enough.

I wanted it for the 16 gauge metal I used on the trough rebuild of my Ambassador.
http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l103/Wrambler_242/?action=view¤t=DonelefttroughII.jpg
Stuff is a bear to cut with shears, or a cutoff wheel.
I still have one side to go.
A plasma would do it, kind of expenive though.
We have a throatless here at work and it does a nice job.
You can cut a straight line pretty easily.
Curves in both directions. etc;
I wanted one for home as running metal back and forth is a PIA.
No, not using it on the boat, Though I have seen Ambassadors called Amboats :]
It's a pretty old fashioned tool, but it does a nice clean job, with zero electric or air power.
Nice and quiet, you can hear yourself think and everything!
