>That's only a RUMOR Anrew, no one has EVER confirmed that an FMX will
interchange with a M-1x or M-4x tranny. Internally they share some parts,
and many rebuild kit makers merge the BW trannys with the FMX and earlier
Ford models that were based on the BW design. They just include a few
extra gaskets, mainly for the valve body. I wish someone would confirm
for sure if an FMX will bolt onto a BW bell and the converter will either
interchange or the BW converter will work on the FMX! That would make
replacements a bit easier, even if a custom driveshaft were needed. Many
assume the BW is a Ford transmission because of the kits, they don't
realize that the Ford is actually a BW transmission!>

Not a rumor. Back in the 70's when I raced the Go-Jo Racing Team "Were
Gone" 69 SC/Rambler, we put a FMX tranny in it because I was tired of
losing once in awhile because I missed a shift plus it was harder to deep
stage with a 4-spd. back then. I can't quite remember exactly what we had
to do to install it but I will try to find out if I have a record of it
someplace and then let you all know.

that was it! i met jock years ago at an albany ny show and he told me
of the fmx then.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AOD_transmission
the aod evolved from the fmx, and i wonder how adaptable it'd be to
older amcs... though i believe it has an integral bell. also,
follow-on 4r70w replaced the fmx planetary with a wide-ratio set, and
i wonder if that would retrofit, to either fmx or iron warner?

At the swap meet last week I saw an FMX with a C6 tag on it for $100 but it was missing the converter. (I let him know the reason it wasn't selling was because a C6 is integral bell/case) I think the AOD is closer to the M37 than the FMX. E4OD is another story (which works well when the computer is properly updated and mods are done to them)
I still haven't found anyone interested in anything from the M37 core trans (rear band was improperly installed by the PO and stuck engaged while driving) I figured someone might want the converter for a core. I'm planning to visit a trans shop or two in the near future with all my cores (still have 2 more to pull)
I also still have the Borg Flexplate from the 232 (late model style in a Postal Jeep) to M11 trans we put in the '68 Rebel.

Now that would be great!! Like others I've HEARD of some doing this, but never a first hand account. It's real easy to confuse the B-W and FMX, and I've had quite a few tell me that they have FMX transmissions in their cars when it was the B-W, mainly because they saw the kit used to rebuild it and it had Ford FMX in big letters, then the other models it could be used for in smaller print, or the guy at the shop told them AMC bought the transmissions (and engines!) from Ford because it was almost identical to the FMX internally. The valve body and case (due to passages to match the valve body) are the main differences... and "Ford" cast on the side instead of a B-W tag.

according to wikipedia [and i'm pretty sure i've read it elsewhere],
the aod/4r70 may have an aluminum case but uses the fmx gears at
least. dunno if it also uses the bands/clutches and/or front pump; it
could be a relatively clean-sheet design.

the e4od/4r100 is a c6+o/d, similar to the evo of the th400 to the
4L80 and the tf727 to the a518/47rh etc.

Tranny question

I have a transmission from a 75 something, it is a TF 904. The numbers on the engine shows it to be a 75 258 so I am assuming it to be a column shift application.
I have a floor shift from an eagle. The shft rod goes into a grommet that takes a 1/2 inch hole, but the tranny arm is way too narrow.
Did they use a different arm coming off the transmission for the floor shift cars? I can drill out the arm but that leaves very little meat on the tranny arm left over.....Russ

just ran across this: http://www.automaticchoice.com/Catalogue/fmx.pdf
you can also find bw12.pdf there.

the fmx still shares a lot of bw internals like frictions and steels,
but it has more of them, 7-8 vs. 3-4. and this bit of identification:
case length model
9 7/8" fx '51-'67, fmx '68-'81
10 3/16" mx '55-'71
11 1/2" lincoln turbo drive '55-'65

lincolns weighed 3 tons empty and had 430-cube v8s. not a performance
application, but that sort of stress has its own demands...

i expect the iron warners are also 9 7/8" long.

That's funny?
I bought it last night too!
I sent the money Western Union! Is that a bad idea?

Oh, well no worries she seems honest enough via email.
Funny thing is address she send me shows an empty lot on google earth.
I asked about that and she said the house is brand new so it does not show.

I guess Rocky and I will have to share the car!

That's Ok I don't mind, Hit the Lotto last week too.

Did I tell everyone I also bought the Michael Jackson suite that bridges the two towers at the Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas?

I think I will have the car flown down when it is my turn to drive it.
