Today's "AMC PIE IN THE SKY" award winner:

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bar/1708780254.html

This one's almost NOT an award winner... But $5k for a six Javelin that needs all the usual resto work, and has a non-original interior...

Probably pie in sky by about $2.5k.

On the other hand, I like six cylinder Javelins, especially when they're manual trans.

So the engine compartment's burned & crispy, the wiring harness is slagged, the engine is toast, there is end-stage body cancer (get a load of those quarters!!)... But it's yours for just $3500.

Sure does. But usually a reasonable offer (say, $500) would be received as an insult.

Like many other Pie In Sky dreamers, he'll advertise this for several months or years, and eventually decide to give it to a crusher for $125.

I suppose if one is thinking the $45,000 AMX's of a few years ago will still fetch $45,000 today, that price is reasonable.

But no.

Today's "AMC PIE IN THE SKY" award winner:

Well, I can't decide. Let's see -- I can get an incomplete rustbucket with no motor or trans for $2800:

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/2511588250.html

... or I can get a rather nice one with a lot of stuff done (and with a motor and trans, even!), for $6000:

http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/2510407103.html

I know getting the first car just to the condition the second one is in would require about $10k in addition to the purchase price, but still, it's such a hard decision.

Well, let's see a Dyancorn body for  a 69 Camaro or a late sixties Mustang
fastback is what?  $15,000.  And that's just a bare body.   Compared to those
priices the first car is a bargain.   It's all in how you look at it.

Funny thing about this listing is that a few years ago, this exact same car was for sale for what I considered the high side of reasonable. It was offered for like $4k or something.

That's the exact same photo being used to sell the car as it was 5 years ago the first time I saw it advertised. Either they're still using the same photo, or the car is still sitting in the exact same spot as it was five years ago -- and the seller was standing in the same place, too.

The first time I saw it advertised, it was by a seller in Virginia. I then saw the same ad in some other state; now it's apparently in Atwater, CA.

Anyway...

TODAY'S AMC PIE IN THE SKY AWARD WINNER

At $1k, this would be well worth the price if only to use it as a reasonable AMC high-mpg daily driver. But $4k puts the kibosh on that.

Solid 4-speed standard transmission, 30-35mpg hatchback in excellent shape with the original Pontiac "Iron Duke" engine still intact; body in great shape 99% rust-free (small patch below rear glass) no body or support rust, stunning cosmetic condition inside and out. New spark plugs, alternator, air hoses, belts, fluids etc. Currently not running due to a wiring fault- needs new battery leads, alternator/starter wiring, new struts, minor exhaust work, choke calibration to get back on the road.

This is an extremely rare vehicle in excellent shape. $4200 OBO Clear NC title in hand.

Location: W Asheville

It's not worth $4.2 K to me but I had an 80 Spirit and actually put quite a bit
of money into the Iron Duke having the machine work done and buying parts.  I
reassembled the engine myself.  Spirits don't have a lot of power with the duke
and the engine is a rough runner.  It does smooth out at about 65 to 70 mph
though.  If it had the 258 I probably would have kept the car, at least longer
than I did.

I wouldn't say it's "extremely" rare, though few that survived had the Iron Duke... for a reason. 30-35 mpg? Only in someone's dreams! 25 I can believe, on the highway. Maybe a bit better under perfect conditions, but I doubt it would hit 30 mpg. Maybe 27-28.
