Greetings All...

Today is a sad day in my never ending pursuit of saving the next Rambler...

On our local Craigslist (IL), a guy in Georgia advertised a 1962 Classic 440 w/under 40k original miles, stored since 1975, for $1,500.00, Upon arriving in town yesterday he sends me an e-mail saying that he cant believe the "damage" his nephew has done to the car, and he's just going to scrap it...  I call him and asdvise I'd still like to have a look at he car and just maybe I'd still be interested in giving it a new home.  I get up to where the car is stored, (Des Plaines IL), about an hour drive from my part of town, and the car is in the yard, from 20 feet it was not bad but up closet looked like it had sat in the Arizona desert for 35 years...there were mounds of crystialized cat urine all over the car and yep, someone left a window down...the interior was gone...the guy tells me that for 35 years the trunk was open and he just closed it to move the car out of the garage...oops ! no trunk key...The body had minor surface rust all over but no
rot and the underside was flakey but no rot out...and the gas tank had a broken strap.  The motor was clean and leak free and was missing the distributor cap, rotor and plug wires but I'm sill thinking that for a few bucks I'd have a winter project.  The guy said that he would not take less than $300.00 as he felt that he could get that for scrap weight and I was going to offer $150-200.00but no more...after going out and locating a trailer the guy tells me, "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that I can't seem to find the title but will give you a bill of sale" ...

The state of Illinois does not recognize bills of sale and he will not go through the effort and expense to obtain a replacement title and without it the car is useless...

A truly sad day...If anyone s interested, I will forward his cell # off list and you may be able to work a deakl with him but it's gonna take a whole lotta fresh air to get that cat smell gone...

how many of these great cars go to the scrap yard because of this? no title, its such a pia to get one, and rather than let someone have it for parts, they want all they can get out of it and would rather have it crushed, rather than salvaged.

Yeah, probably wouldn't matter though, Illinois with the windows down, it's
all trash anyways. My little American was similar, window down (without the
IL winters and rain) and basically I gutted it top bottom and dash, and ran
a hose inside with purple cleaner, scrub brushes and such. Not much survives
that.

There is enzymatic odor killers, we use "NATURE'S MIRACLE", it kills dog pee
smell on rugs etc after you get the bulk of it out with towels and wet
towels.

But it sounds too far gone to be an "easy" restore. But I've watched Model A
people pull rusting frames from hillsides as the basis for projects. 1962
was 48 years ago! Big flakes of rust means the surfaces have lost mass and
have porous surfaces that will continue to rot unless sandblasted or
something. Ugh.

Personally I don't see any real difference between $300 and $150 in cases
like this. No title though is a major PITA!
